Jam of the Day:

Valentine by the Old 97’s

Back in 2001, Satellite Rides was one of my favorite albums. Since then, I’ve wanted to see the Old 97’s live, but it never really happened. As they released more albums, I stopped listening to them as much, as none of them (in my mind) quite stacked up to Satellite Rides or Fight Songs. I noticed they were in Charlotte tonight and was on the fence about going to the show, as I’ve had a long week of work and a busy day tomorrow. Fortunately, my friend Dave told me to man up and go to the show.

I ended up being really impressed. Lead singer Rhett Miller opened up with some solo stuff, which was all really good and when the full band came out, they played with a ton of energy. They didn’t play all my old favorites from 2001 (though they hit a couple), but it was still a great show. My favorite part was the encore when bassist Murry Hammond came out and sang a song on his own, followed by beginning this jam. Halfway through the song, Rhett came out to supply backup vocals and it was kinda perfect.
